  • Changes to Sound Transmission Codes for Basement Suite

Suite Builder sound proof your basement renovation project

    Sound Transmission Rating

The standards for minimum sound transmission ratings between secondary suites and main floors have been added to the building code effective Dec. 2019. Specifically for secondary suites. Suite Builder has been doing this for home owners that want the added sound barrier for more comfort going above and beyond the standards.

    Resilient Channel

Resilient channel is a thin metal channel that is intelligently designed to substantially improve the sound insulation of drywall, sheetrock, plasterboard walls and ceilings. The channel effectively isolates drywall from the framing stud work, which results in the weakening of sound waves substantially. Also Suite Builder will add double drywall and rockwool Safe 'N' Sound mineral wool fire and soundproofing batt insulation to your ceilings.

    Soundproofing your Basement

Soundproofing the ceiling between a secondary suite and upper units not only benefits the family living upstairs but also those in the legal basement suite. Soundproofing provides privacy to both families and reduces any bothersome sound travelling through the ceiling. In a perfect world it would be fantastic to not hear anything from either family but this will considerably reduce the sound travel between each unit.

Suite Builder is always going above and beyond the standard codes to make your legal basement suite the best for your family and the families you lease your basement suite to.
